Hummel’s Sizzling Finish Helps Him Claim
The 2023 NCPGA Section Senior Professional Championship
Congratulations to PGA Professional Steve Hummel of Wolf Run Golf Club on winning the 2023 Northern California Section PGA Senior Professional Championship at Del Rio Country Club in Modesto, CA. Steve battled back from a slow start in his final round to win the Championship in thrilling fashion. Through 29 holes of the Championship, Steve stood at one over par and six shots back of Don Winter of Castlewood Country Club, who was at five under par. Steve then erupted and birdied the next five holes! Steve and Don stood on the final hole of the Championship tied for the lead at four under par. Both men hit in the fairway on the par five 18th hole. Don was first to play and hit his fairway wood that came up just short of the green in the rough. Steve then hit his hybrid into the right center of the green with about 40 feet for eagle. Don’s pitch shot landed at the flagstick and released out to about 15 feet. Steve’s eagle putt came up about three feet short. Don barely missed his putt on the low side giving Steve the opportunity for the outright win. Steve converted the putt to finish at five under par for the Championship, which included a final nine of 31 on the River Course at Del Rio Country Club. His scores of 70-69 for a total of 139 beat Don Winter by one shot.
Steve’s victory earned him a spot in the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, FL October 26-29. Along with Steve Hummel and Don Winter, David Putney of Empire Ranch Golf Club, David Carr of Teal Bend Golf Club, and Lance Johnson of Swenson Park Golf Club also qualified for the 2023 Senior PGA Professional Championship.
